5 Strategies for English Language Learners (Lesson Delivery)

Teacher Modeling

Strategy Overview-

This strategy is all about providing the student with a model of behavior, process, and outcome.  The teacher models an activity so that the student is able to clearly see and understand the expectations for the assignment.  This might also include models of various assignment products and the grades that would be associated with them.

What are the benefits of using it?-

The benefits of modeling are numerous.  It reduces student confusion, provides clarity, incorporates differentiation, increases retention and improved student outcomes.  Time spent modeling up front will be more than compensated for when students are expected to perform independently.

QAR Strategy

Strategy Overview-

Question-Answer-Relationship(QAR) is a reading strategy that encourages students to ask questions and think critically about their reading.  This is an active protocol that occurs as the student is reading.  There are “right there”, “think and search”, “author and me”, and “on my own” questions.

What are the benefits of using it?-

This strategy occurs throughout the reading and helps students focus in on the reading.  It improves comprehension because students are critically thinking about their reading.  Students can write their questions in a notebook as they read independently.

GIST

Strategy Overview-

This is a text annotating strategy.  It’s all about identifying the most important information that can be found in the reading.  It involves both language domains of reading and writing.

What are the benefits of using it?-

This is a strategy that ca be used in multiple subject areas.  It provides a framework for students to critically analyze a piece of reading to identify important information.

Think Alouds

Strategy Overview-

This strategy involves the verbalization of thinking.  Imagine being able to read the teacher’s mind as they complete an assignment.  It’s the act of talking through your thought process.  This strategy can be used in multiple academic content areas.

What are the benefits of using it?-

It’s a great way to model how an expert thinker solves a problem or thinks about content.  It provides differentiation as different students will require various amounts of guidance to successfully navigate an assignment.  It’s also fun for students to observe how their teachers think.

Using Body Language

Strategy Overview-

This is one of my favorite strategies.  It comes more naturally to some individuals than others.  It is a comprehensive strategy that can be as simple as how students are greeted and welcomed into your classroom to the way you might use facial and hand gestures to accompany verbal prompts.

What are the benefits of using it?-

Learning  to effectively use body language can yield benefits such as increased student engagement, better classroom management, and create a welcoming environment for students.
